NEW YORK -- Chris Smith scored 15 points and Manhattan applied a stifling defense to beat Iona 52-39 on Monday night.
The game was the second-lowest MAAC scoring total by both teams since the league began in 1980. The only lower total was on Feb. 23, 1982, when St. Peter's defeated Manhattan 44-36.
The points were the sixth-fewest in a game for Iona since the school began playing basketball in 1945.
The 39 points were the fewest given up by Manhattan since defeating NJIT 70-28 at the outset of the 2007-08 season.
Manhattan led 19-11 at halftime and never trailed in the second half.
