MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Orlando Mendez-Valdez scored with 19 points, grabbed five rebounds and had five assists to lead Western Kentucky to a 68-49 victory over Middle Tennessee on Saturday night.
Western Kentucky opened the game with a 13-5 lead after Slaughter made a layup with 14:38 left in the first half. The Hilltoppers followed that with an 11-0 run, holding Middle Tennessee scoreless for more than seven minutes.
Western Kentucky went into halftime with a 39-17 lead, controlling the rest of the contest.
