COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland presented Gary Williams a victory in his 1,000th game as a college head coach, getting 19 points from slow-starting Greivis Vasquez in an 88-64 rout of North Carolina State on Saturday night.
Vasquez scored 17 after halftime on 6-for-8 shooting, and Landon Milbourne finished with 18 points for the Terrapins (13-5, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference).Williams is 638-362 over a 32-year coaching career that began at American University and included stays at Boston College and Ohio State. He is 431-234 in 21 seasons at Maryland, where he won the 2002 national championship.Williams' latest victory at his alma mater, combined with Virginia's loss at Wake Forest, lifted the Terrapins into a tie atop the ACC standings.Tracy Smith scored 18 for N.C. State (13-7, 2-4). Coming off a home win over Duke, the Wolfpack fell behind early in losing six straight to Maryland.
