PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Vincent Council scored 18 points and Bilal Dixon pulled down 11 rebounds as Providence routed Dartmouth 87-52 Saturday night in both teams' opener.
Freshman guard Gerard Coleman made several athletic layups in his 17-point Friars debut, and fellow newcomer Bryce Cotton added 15 points for Providence, the Big East's youngest team.
R.J. Griffin led Dartmouth with 12 points, and Lithuanian freshman Gediminas Bertasius added 10 points.
Providence opened the game on a 19-3 run and never looked back, shooting 56 percent from the field. Providence limited Dartmouth to 16-of-63 shooting and had a 52-28 rebounding advantage.
The Friars surrendered the most points per game in Big East history last season, but their tight defense, including a thunderous, finger-wagging Dixon block that left Griffin splayed out on the court, stifled the Big Green throughout.
