JACKSON, Miss. -- Grant Maxey had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Jackson State overcame a five-point deficit in the final 36 seconds to beat Prairie View 54-53 on Monday night.
Maxey made both free throws and Trant Simpson, who led Prairie View with 13 points, immediately committed a turnover. The Tigers (14-11, 10-3 Southwestern Athletic Conference) got the ball back, the Panthers (6-19, 3-9) fouled quickly and Rod Melvin made two free throws, capping an 8-0 run in 34 seconds. Jackson State led 54-51 against a team which would lose its fourth straight and seventh in eight games.
The Big 12/SEC Challenge will again feature Kansas and Kentucky, this time at Rupp Arena. That's not the only exciting matchup in next season's midseason conference showdown.
Northwestern has never made the NCAA tournament, but the Wildcats' upward trajectory suggests 2016-17 could finally be the season it happens.
Dillon Brooks, who led Oregon with 16.7 points per game last season, and Tyler Dorsey will opt out of the NBA draft process and return to the Ducks, sources told ESPN.
