BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Bradford Burgess scored 16 points as Virginia Commonwealth broke open a close game in the second half and defeated Western Kentucky 68-45 on Wednesday night.
VCU led 31-27 at halftime, but shot 64 percent (16 of 25) from the field in the second half to put the game away. The Rams (3-2) built a 24-point lead with 1:51 to play.
Meanwhile, the Hilltoppers (1-5) had trouble making shots in the final 20 minutes. Western Kentucky shot only 35 percent (7 of 20) in the second half and went the final 3:57 of the game without a field goal.
VCU's defense also was effective, getting 28 points off 22 Hilltopper turnovers.
Derrick Gordon scored 12 points to lead the Hilltoppers, who have lost four in a row.
