BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Xavier Roberson posted his fourth straight game with four or more 3-pointers and Augustine Rubit tallied a double-double to lead South Alabama over Florida Atlantic 77-66 Thursday night in the conference opener for both teams.
Roberson went 5 of 8 from deep en route to a season-high 23 points and Rubit had 11 points and 10 boards for the Jaguars (3-3), who won their 300th Sun Belt game and helped coach Ronnie Arrow tie Gene Bartow for most Sun Belt wins in league history.
South Alabama scored 18 points in the paint and made 17 of 34 shots en route to a 44-33 halftime lead. The Jaguars continued their hot shooting in the second half, as FAU (2-4) never got within eight points of the lead.
South Alabama forced 14 turnovers and recorded eight or more steals for fifth time this season.
Greg Gantt led FAU with 29 points.
Maryland point guard Melo Trimble, considered a lock to leave the program before struggling in the second half last season, has withdrawn from the NBA draft and will return for his junior season.
Louisville's Chinanu Onuaku, who recently underwent a medical procedure to correct a heart rhythm issue detected during the combine, will keep his name in the NBA draft pool.
Andrew White III will return to the Nebraska men's basketball team next season after removing his name from the NBA draft.
