THIBODAUX, La. -- Fred Hunter scored 19 points and T.J. Carpenter had 17 to lead Nicholls State to an 83-79 victory over Central Arkansas in both teams' Southland Conference opener.
Jeremy Smith scored 16 points and Shane Rillieux 15 for the Colonels (2-9), who snapped a seven-game losing streak.
Carpenter has scored in double figures in 10 of the 11 games.
Robert Crawford scored 21 points for the Bears (5-6), Jarvis Garner had 18 points and seven rebounds and Daoude Berete scored 15 points.
The Bears committed 22 turnovers to the Colonels' 13. Nicholls State was 22 of 35 from the line, Central Arkansas 14 of 18.
The Colonels led 38-30 at the half and by as many as 10 points in the second. The only time the lead was less than four was when the Bears closed to 81-79 on Crawford's tip-in with 3 seconds left.
