NATCHITOCHES, La. -- James Hulbin scored 19 points and Northwestern State closed out the game with 11 unanswered points to rally past Stephen F. Austin 61-57 Saturday in a contest pitting the nation's top offense against its top defense.
The Demons (12-6, 6-2 Southland Conference) came in averaging 85 points per game while the Lumberjacks were allowing only 49.4 points. The loss snapped Stephen F. Austin's 11-game winning streak, the second-longest in the country.
The game featured eight ties and 15 lead changes. The Lumberjacks (16-2, 7-1), who were 16-0 this season when leading with five minutes left, had a 57-50 advantage with 4:04 remaining, but would not score again as Northwestern State made 4 of 8 field goals.
Northwestern State, which posted its lowest winning score this season, forced 22 turnovers.
