CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Calvin Newell scored 19 points to lead Central Florida to a 63-58 win over Miami on Thursday night.
Kasey Wilson converted one of two free throws with 36 seconds left for a 61-58 lead and gave the Knights additional cushion with a fast break dunk with 22 seconds left. Wilson finished with 16 points for the Knights (3-1).
Miami (3-2) had a chance to tie it with 39 seconds remaining but Donnavan Kirk missed two free throw attempts.
Rion Brown stole Newell's inbounds pass and scored on a layup with 55 seconds left to cut Central Florida's lead to 59-58. Brown's two free throws with 59 seconds remaining got Miami within 59-56.
Garrius Adams scored 20 points to lead the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes scored seven unanswered late in the second half and cut a nine-point deficit. James Kelly's put-back basket with 3:45 remaining capped the spurt and got the Hurricanes to within, 54-52.
Wilson's running jumper with 2:49 ended a scoreless drought of 3:21 for the Knights and increased their lead to 56-52. Newell's layup with 2:25 left gave Central Florida a 58-52 advantage.
Central Florida fought off an earlier Miami comeback in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. Wilson's dunk with 6:09 remaining put the Knights ahead, 54-45.
The Hurricanes rallied from an 11-point deficit early in the second half as they outscored the Knights, 16-6, during a 5:29 stretch. Adams' free throw with 12:16 remaining got Miami within 42-39.
Davon Reed scored 17 points and Brown finished with 11 points for the Hurricanes.
The Knights increased a seven-point halftime lead into double figures after Newell's layup 1:51 into the second half for a 34-23 advantage.
Spurlock's 3-pointer with 4:33 remaining gave the Knights their biggest lead of the first half at 26-19.
Central Florida matched the seven-point advantage again on Wilson's layup with 47 seconds remaining for a 28-21 lead at halftime.
