WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Freshman Omar Prewitt came off the bench to score 18 points as William and Mary held off Liberty 84-72 on Tuesday night.
After Antwan Burrus' jumper with 1:28 to play cut the William and Mary lead to 76-70, Prewitt found Terry Tarpey for a layup to push the Tribe's lead back to eight points. Wesley Alcegaire responded with a jumper of his own before Prewitt hit two free throws with :51 remaining and Liberty (1-1) never threatened again.
Marcus Thornton, one of four returning starters for William and Mary (1-1), scored a game-high 23 points.
With the Tribe trailing 28-21 with 6:56 left in the first half, Prewitt hit a 3-pointer, sparking a 13-4 run to close out the first half. William and Mary went into the break leading 34-32.
Tim Rusthoven added 16 points in the win.
Burrus paced the Flames with 18 points on 9-of-13 shooting.
