ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Andre Smith scored 13 points to lead Winthrop to a 69-57 victory over James Madison on Wednesday night.
Smith hit 3 of 6 from the 3-point line and had four rebounds and three assists. Joab Jerome scored 11 points with five rebounds and Tevin Prescott had 10 points, three rebounds and a pair of steals. Josh Davenport came off the bench to score nine points and grab four rebounds.
James Madison jumped to a 7-0 lead early in the first period but was soon overtaken by Winthrop in a flurry of 3-pointers by Smith and Keon Moore.
The Eagles (5-1) led 35-26 at the break and would maintain the advantage throughout the second half.
Winthrop sank 39 percent of their shots from the field and 63 percent from the line.
Ron Curry led the Dukes (2-5) in scoring with 15 points while pulling down seven rebounds.
