ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Joab Jerome scored 20 points -- on 7 of 9 shooting -- to pace Winthrop over Appalachian State 80-72 on Sunday.
The game was won on the free throw line, as Winthrop went to the line 17 more times than the Mountaineers and made 10 more.
Winthrop used a 13-2 run early in the first half en route to a five point lead at intermission.
Appalachian State cut the lead to one with 5:18 left after a pair of Burgess free throws, but Moore hit a jumper and was fouled by Hamilton. He made the free throw and it never got that close again down the stretch.
