UNC Asheville holds off Charleston Southern 82-71

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Andrew Rowsey scored 23 points and UNC Asheville beat Charleston Southern 82-71 Wednesday night.

With the game tied at 25, UNC Asheville closed the opening period with a 20-1 run to take a 45-16 lead into the break. The Buccaneers (11-15, 5-8 Big South) finished the half by going 0 for 7 from the field with four turnovers.

The Bulldogs (14-13, 8-5) extended their lead to 25 nearly 5 minutes into the second half but made just one field goal over a 5-minute stretch and Charleston Southern rattled off 14 straight points, narrowing the gap to 66-57 with 8:48 to play.

UNC Asheville made 8 of 11 free throws in the final 4:03 to hold on for the win.

Jaron Lane added 22 points and D.J. Cunningham had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Sheldon Strickland finished with 26 points in the loss.
