JONESBORO, Ark. -- Kirk Van Slyke scored 16 points to lead four players in double figures as Arkansas State beat Tennessee Martin 72-62 on Wednesday night.
After Javier Martinez cut the Arkansas State lead to 42-41 with 17:21 left to play, the Red Wolves responded with a 12-2 run, including two 3-pointers by Cameron Golden, and UT Martin never got closer than seven again.
The Skyhawks outrebounded Arkansas State (2-0) 47-36 and pulled down 18 offensive boards, but converted just 25 of 69 (36.2 percent) field goals and made 2 of 17 (11.8 percent) 3-point shots.
Van Slyke made 7 of 11 from the floor and added four blocked shots. Melvin Johnson III scored 15 points, hitting 4 of 7 from behind the 3-point line. Golden added 13 points and Brandon Reed 10. Kendrick Washington tied a career-high with 11 rebounds.
Marshun Newell led UTM (0-3) with 18 points.
