BOONE, N.C. -- Tommy Spagnolo scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Appalachian State beat Samford 74-68 on Thursday.
It was Spagnolo's fourth straight double-double in a mid-afternoon game that was moved up because of snow in the area.
Tab Hamilton added 18 points and Chris Burgess and freshman Ty Toney had 14 apiece for Appalachian State (8-16, 4-7 Southern Conference). Burgess started the game 3 of 3 from beyond the arc, but the Mountaineers shot just 33 percent in the first half and trailed 34-30. But Appalachian State got hot in the second, making 71.4 percent.
Appalachian State made 21 of 37 free throws (56.8 percent) in the game, but hit 6 of 8 in the final minute.
There were nine ties in the game and 15 lead changes as Samford dropped to 2-13 on the road this season.
