Carter leads Purdue in 82-64 romp against Indiana

    Associated Press

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Sterling Carter had 19 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead Purdue to an 82-64 win in Mackey Arena against rival Indiana on Saturday.

Purdue (15-10, 5-7 Big Ten) used a 19-1 run that began in the first half's final 36 seconds and carried through the first five minutes of the second half as the springboard to victory.

Carter scored Purdue's first 10 second-half points, including a pair of 3-pointers that helped extend a 38-33 halftime advantage to 52-34 with 15 minutes remaining.

Purdue was well on its way to taking a 113-88 lead in the all-time series.

The victory snapped the Boilermakers' four-game losing streak against the Hoosiers who had won those four by an average of 23.3 points.

It was the third consecutive Big Ten loss for Indiana (14-11, 4-8) since upsetting 10th-ranked Michigan on Feb. 2 in Bloomington.

This meeting marked the first time the Boilermakers and Hoosiers entered this game with sub-.500 conference record through 11 league games since the 1965-66 season when each finished 4-10 in the Big Ten, tied for last place.

Purdue raced to a 16-8 lead in this game, but Will Sheehey and Yogi Ferrell shot the Hoosiers into a 27-22 advantage.

The Boilermakers closed the half with a 16-6 burst to lead by five at the half.

Ferrell had 27 points, and Noah Vonleh added 14 for Indiana.

Ronnie Johnson scored 16, and Terone Johnson had 14 for the Boilermakers.

Purdue made 25 of 52 field goals (48.1 percent) and limited IU to 19-of-59 shooting for 32.2 percent. The Boilermakers outrebounded the Hoosiers 39-35.

The 18-point margin of victory is Purdue's largest against IU since a 74-55 victory on March 3, 2010, also in Mackey Arena.
