HOUSTON -- Tamir Jackson overcame a scoreless first half to pour in 22 points as Rice held off Chicago State for a 63-60 overtime victory on Wednesday night.
Austin Ramljak had 10 points and Seth Gearhart made two free throws with seven seconds left in OT for the winning margin for the Owls (3-7). Quinton Pippen had a shot to tie for the Cougars (3-10), but his 3-pointer with two seconds left missed.
Jackson went 0 for 4 from the field to fail to score in the opening half for the first time this season. He started the second half with a 3-pointer and finished 7 of 16 with three makes from behind the arc.
The Cougars dominated inside, outrebounding Rice 47-23 and owning a 32-14 scoring edge in the paint.
Maryland point guard Melo Trimble, considered a lock to leave the program before struggling in the second half last season, has withdrawn from the NBA draft and will return for his junior season.
Louisville's Chinanu Onuaku, who recently underwent a medical procedure to correct a heart rhythm issue detected during the combine, will keep his name in the NBA draft pool.
Andrew White III will return to the Nebraska men's basketball team next season after removing his name from the NBA draft.
