GRAMBLING, La. -- Matt Smith tallied 17 points and seven rebounds to help Mississippi Valley State beat Grambling State 65-50 Monday night and hand the Tigers their 18th straight loss.
Davon Usher knocked down three treys en route to 14 points and Cordarius Sample came off the bench for 12 points for the Delta Devils, who snapped a two-game losing streak.
Grambling State outshot MVSU (2-16, 2-6 Southwestern Athletic Conference) 42.9 percent (21 of 49) to 41.9 percent (26 of 62) and held a 36-30 rebounding edge but the Tigers committed 20 turnovers. MVSU scored 26 points off those errors.
Brandon Dorsett led Grambling (0-18, 0-9) with 11 points but was the lone Tiger in double figures. The Tigers' bench contributed 12 points, compared to 19 for MVSU.
The Delta Devils opened the game on an 11-2 run and took a 30-21 lead into halftime. MVSU led by as much as 20, 65-45.
The Big 12/SEC Challenge will again feature Kansas and Kentucky, this time at Rupp Arena. That's not the only exciting matchup in next season's midseason conference showdown.
