LYNCHBURG, Va. -- John Brown scored 17 points and Allan Chaney had 16 points and a career-high 13 rebounds as High Point won its sixth straight game, beating Liberty 73-68 Saturday night to clinch a share of the Big South Conference North Division.
The Panthers (15-10, 10-3), who have the best league record after UNC Asheville's loss to Charleston Southern, also secured a first-round bye in the Big South tournament.
High Point swept the season series against the Flames for only the second time, also winning 77-72 in double overtime on Jan. 16.
The Panthers led 35-24 at intermission, but Liberty tied it at 42 with 11:40 to go after five straight points by John Caleb Sanders, whose 23 points led the Flames (9-18, 5-8).
High Point answered with a 15-5 run, but Liberty's 10-2 spurt made it 59-57 with 5:24 left.
The Panthers made 10 of 12 free throws to seal it.
Former Kentucky guard Ed Davender, the only Wildcat with at least 1,500 points and 400 assists, has died. He was 49.
Guard Naz Mitrou-Long, whose 2015-16 season ended in December due to hip problems, has been granted a hardship waiver for the coming season, Iowa State said.
As the Sooners look to life without superstar Buddy Hield and his sidekicks, it's clear their unseasoned players will need to grow up fast.
