Conference USA Breakdown

 ESPN.com

HOW THEY'LL STACK UP
AMERICAN DIVISION
CINCINNATI: Yes, even with Kenyon & Co. playing in the NBA.
DEPAUL: Time for Simmons to take center stage.
LOUISVILLE: Not a lot up front, but enough to stay competitive.
CHARLOTTE: New name, new logo, but expect same level of success.
MARQUETTE: Improving, but still a notch below the rest.
SAINT LOUIS: Should repeat regular season, not C-USA tourney success.
NATIONAL DIVISION
SOUTH FLORIDA: Sweet 16 team? Believe it. These Bulls are good.
MEMPHIS: Five returning starters + Calipari = NCAA Tourney.
UAB: Expect more "ups" than "downs" from a .500 team of a year ago.
SO. MISSISSIPPI: Defense is second to none, but still not enough.
HOUSTON: Phi Slama See ya ... Ray McCallum can't dunk, but can win.
TULANE: All is not lost ... just Perry, the top scorer and best rebounder.

Tuesday, Nov. 7
Last year, all the power in Conference USA resided in the American Division. No team in the National Division had a winning in-conference record. The best the National could do was to have three teams at .500.

That will change this year.

The balance of power will be distributed more evenly between the two divisions. Cincinnati and DePaul dominated last year. This year it will be a little different. Cincy and DePaul will once again be at the top, but on the National side, both Memphis and South Florida are coming on strong, and look like they'll be ready to challenge for the conference championship.

There is much more balance in Conference USA this year.

ESPN.com All-Conference Team
  • Guard: Kenny Satterfield
    Sophomore, Cincinnati
  • Guard: Marques Maybin
    Senior, Louisville
  • Guard: Brian Wardle
    Senior, Marquette
  • Forward: Altron Jackson
    Junior, South Florida
  • Center: Kelly Wise
    Junior, Memphis

    Player of Year ...
    Kenny Satterfield, Cincinnati
Kenyon leaves, Kenny arrives ... well, he's actually been here a year, but look for the 6-foot-2 guard to take over as the Bearcats go-to player. The focus shifts from inside to outside with Satterfield running the show. Not a great outside shooter, but still managed to shoot 43 percent because of his athletic moves to the basket as a freshman.

    Introducing ...
    Antwan Jones, F, Cincinnatil
The 6-foot-8 junior college transfer won't start the season healthy, but look for the terrific all-around player to dominate once his broken foot completely heels. ETA: December. A very strong offensive force down low, who can also play outside at the swing position. But it's his strong inside game that will contribute the most to the Cincy's offense.

    Best backcourt ...
Cincinnati: The duo of Kenny Satterfield and Steve Logan isn't just loaded with talent, but also compliments each other very well.. Both are very, very quick guards. Logan is a good distributor of the ball, while Satterfield is an excellent shooter and ball handler.

    Best frontcourt ...
DePaul: But both South Florida and Memphis receive an honorable mention. DePaul's Bobby Simmons has room to opperate with Q gone, and he can still be a great swing player. Lance Williams, who had a broken foot last year, figures to come back strong -- he's on the verge of having a terrific year. And 7-foot freshman center, Steve Hunter, will really blossom this year. Put that all together and the Blue Demons have a tremendous frontcourt.

    Team on way up ...
Charlotte: It looks like the 49ers have turned it around from a somewhat mediocre season last year. They have a good recruiting class and a chance to move up.

    Team on way down ...
Tulane: The Green Wave lost a number of quality players from last year's club and they don't have much coming back.

    Tournament tough ...
NCAA: Cincinnati, DePaul, Charlotte, Memphis, South Florida.
    NIT: Louisville, Marquette, UAB.
