HOW THEY'LL STACK UP
EAST DIVISION
TENNESSEE: No excuses; Vols have been steadily building for this season.
KENTUCKY: Landing Parker was nation's biggest recruiting coup.
FLORIDA: Haslem can't survive without viable second option.
SOUTH CAROLINA: May still be a year away from greatness.
GEORGIA: Talk about turnover ... five frosh will see playing time.
VANDERBILT: Speaking of freshman ... Stallings has six newbies.
WEST DIVISION
ALABAMA: A notch above the weaker side of SEC.
ARKANSAS: Plenty of interchangable parts to creat opponents "Hell."
MISSISSIPPI STATE: Bording on Big Dance bid with plenty of depth.
AUBURN: Really, REALLY, young Tigers need leadership.
LSU: Swift shift in power, but Bright future.
MISSISSIPPI: Even in the West, the Rebels will struggle.

The Southeastern Conference is coming off of one of its best years in recent memory. And it's poised to maintain the same level they had last year.

There are a few teams who have improved dramatically, and the overall talent level has seen a marked improvement. The East is very much the dominant division. It has four clubs with a tremendous overload of talent. Georgia and Vanderbilt will be solid, while Florida, Kentucky and South Carolina are equally good clubs.

On paper, Tennessee is far and away the best team in the SEC at the beginning of the season.

ESPN.com All-Conference Team
  • Guard: Tony Harris
    Senior, Tennessee
  • Guard: D.A. Layne
    Junior, Georgia
  • Forward: Vincent Yarbrough
    Junior, Tennessee
  • Forward: Joe Johnson
    Sophomore, Arkansas
  • Center: Udonis Haslem
    Junior, Florida

    Player of Year ...
    Joe Johnson, Arkansas
At 6-foot-9, Johnson is a foward with guard-like moves. The only question may be his health after offseason ankle surgery. When he's 100 percent, nobody can touch him in the league: 16.0 ppg., 5.7 rpg. and 46.4 percent shooting as a freshman.

    Introducing ...
    Gerald Wallace, F, Alabama
This 6-foot-7 dynamo is the complete player with a total game. It would be shocking if he stays at Alabama for more than two years. The NBA nearly had him out of high school.

    Best backcourt ...
Florida: Teddy Dupay and Brett Nelson. Dupay is a hard-nosed, tough little kid who can handle and shoot the ball. Nelson may be one of the flashiest players Florida has seen for some time. He's very quick with the ball and also a good shooter. Both of these guys possess the combined talents to be able to play the point and the shooting guard.

    Best frontcourt ...
Tennessee: Why? Because of the Vols' experience. Yarbrough, Isiah Victor, Ron Slay, Marcus Haslip ... all four of these guys are solid inside players. Tennessee is coming in as the best team in the league, and it's mainly because of the Vols' frontcourt.

    Team on way up ...
South Carolina: Coming off a mediocre year, head coach Eddie Fogler had a great recruiting year. There are several freshmen who will have an impact and 6-9 Rolando Howell should step right into the starting frontline. The Gamecocks had some tough losses last year, but appear more poised this year with the talent they have coming in

    Team on way down ...
Auburn: We're hesitant in picking the Tigers, here. But after great back-to-back years, they have a lot of question marks this year. It's unclear how all of their new players will mesh with the few returning veterans. Don't expect the lull to last long with only one senior on the roster and plenty of talent coming in.

    Tournament tough ...
NCAA: Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, South Carolina, Kentucky, Florida.
NIT: Mississippi State, Auburn, Georgia, Mississippi.
