HOW THEY'LL STACK UP
CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE: Matadors will enjoy conference farewell tour.
WEBER STATE: "The Show" has left town; It'll be a tough act to follow.
E. WASHINGTON: Lost outright league title in final game a year ago.
MONTANA STATE: Finished last season with eight straight losses.
PORTLAND STATE: 10 new faces make this squad an unknown quality.
MONTANA: Rebounding will make or break Grizzlies' season.
NORTHERN ARIZONA: Boasts "All-Name Team" guard Commander King.
IDAHO STATE: May still not make conference tourney, but will be better.
SACRAMENTO ST.: Winless in 4 years on the road in Big Sky: 0-32.

Tuesday, Nov. 7
Bobby Braswell has always had the most athletic teams in the Big Sky, even two years ago when Weber State had Eddie Gill and Harold Arceneaux. But the time has come for Braswell to get Northridge past the conference tournament title game and into the NCAA Tournament.

The Matadors are leaving next season for the Big West and this is the perfect exit. Anything short of an automatic berth for the Matadors will be deemed a major disappointment.

ESPN.com All-Big Sky
  • Guard: Markus Carr
    Junior, 6-1, Northridge
  • Guard: Adam Lopez
    Junior, 6-0, Northern Arizona
  • Forward: Anthony Lackey
    Junior, 6-5, Portland State
  • Forward: Chris White
    Senior, 6-9, Eastern Washington
  • Center: Brian Heinle
    Senior, 6-9, Northridge

    Player of Year ...
    Brian Heinle, Cal State Northridge
At 6-10, the senior is a tough matchup both inside and outside. Yes, we said outside. Heinle led all D-1 centers in 3-point shooting, making 37 of 100 attempts. Not that he stayed outside, grabbing 6.4 rebounds a game to go along with his 14.6 ppg.

    Introducing ...
John Burrell, F, Cal State Northridge
As if the Matadors needed any additional scoring. Burrell brings plenty of offense with him from Nevada, where he transferred in from last season. The 6-3 swingman averaged 16.4 points a game, second-best in the Big West during the 1989-99 season.

    Best backcourt ...
Northern Arizona: Adam Lopez and Corey Schwab. The only two starters back from last year's NCAA Tournament team give the Lumberjacks experience. And how can you not like a backcourt with a Commander coming off the bench -- as in Commander King.

    Best frontcourt ...
Cal State Northridge: Brian Heinle, Jeff Parris and John Burrell. You already know about Heinle, but Parris averaged nearly 12 points a game and 4.6 rebounds. A former Prop 48 student, Parris earned his degree in psychology last spring and earned another year of eligibility. Burrell provides more offense, while 6-8 Joey Busch is another juco transfer who gives head coach Bobby Braswell another option in the frontcourt.

    Team on way up ...
Eastern Washington: Even with the departure of head coach Steve Aggers, who turned the program around, the Eagles appear on the verge of taking the next step. The Eagles have three returning starters, led by 6-5 senior Aaron Olson, and plenty of depth in the backcourt.

    Team on way down ...
Northern Arizona: After 83 wins over the past four seasons and an NCAA Tournament appearance last season, the Lumberjacks figure to have a letdown and problem replacing the core of those teams -- Billy Hix, Ross Land and 7-foot Dan McClintock.

    Tournament tough ...
    NCAA: Cal State Northridge.
