Big South Breakdown

 ESPN.com

HOW THEY'LL STACK UP
WINTHROP: Simply the best the Big South has to offer -- again.
RADFORD: If somebody's going to knock off Winthrop, look here.
UNC ASHEVILLE: Doesn't have the talent of "Big Two," but what's new?
LIBERTY: If Jerry's kids keep it simple, they may score more.
COASTAL CAROLINA: Strickland won't make excuses for team.
ELON: Clearly a contender on the road to 2002 NCAA eligibility ...
HIGH POINT: ... nowhere near a contender on same road to 2002.
CHARLESTON SOUTHERN: The 3 'Rs' to follow ... recruit, recruit, recruit.

Tuesday, Nov. 7
Gregg Marshall has been one of the hidden gems in low majors after leading Winthrop to back-to-back 21-win seasons.

The Eagles open up against North Carolina in the NABC Classic Friday, but could pull off an upset against either Tulsa or Arizona State on Saturday.

They should be the favorite to win the Big South's bid and get back to the NCAA Tournament. The key could be the continued development of sophomore Eyo Effiong, a bruising center, to go along with Gregg Lewis and Marcus Stewart, a transfer from Coastal Carolina.

Winthrop beat Missouri last season and could pull off another name upset again.

    Player of Year ...
    Jason Williams, Radford
No reason to think last year's Big South player of the year won't duplicate his numbers in his senior campaign. Williams, a 6-7 forward, averaged 18.1 points a game (19 ppg. in conference play). He also grabbed 6.5 rebounds a game. His only drawback may be his attitude. Williams hasn't exactly endeared himself with coach Ron Bradley, who suspended Williams for three games last season.

    Introducing ...
    Marcus Stewart, F, Winthrop
OK, so maybe he's not exactly new to the Big South. After all, he was an All-Rookie selection back in 1998-99 when he averaged 13.3 points and 5.2 rebounds a game. But that was with Coastal Carolina. He's now in Rock Hill, where he brings a 6-6 frame and plenty of athleticism to the Eagles.

    Best backcourt ...
UNC Asheville: Andre Smith, Brett Carey and Brandon Carter. Smith was the conference's rookie of the year after averaging 11.3 points a game and showing the poise far beyond his years. He was a perfect fit with Carey, who enters his senior season as the best 3-point shooter in the Big South (44 percent). Carter gives the Bulldogs size in the backcourt at 6-3, allowing them to go with a very effective three-guard offense.

    Best frontcourt ...
Winthrop: Greg Lewis, Marcus Stewart and Eyo Effiong. This is a new honor for the Eagles, which is a good thing considering the backcourt's lack of experience. The key to this group is the 6-6 senior Lewis, who really came on strong last season after transferring in from Howard (Texas) College. He scored in double figures in 25 of 30 games and saved his best performance for the Big South championship when he tallied 18 points and 18 rebounds. Stewart comes in with his Coastal credentials, while Effiong is a honor student who averaged 8.2 points and 6.2 rebounds last season.

    Team on way up ...
Liberty: Remember, the Flames started last year 10-3 against non-conference foes before collapsing in league play and finishing the year 14-14. Don't expect the latter to happen this season with a veteran unit that learned plenty from last year's woes.

    Team on way down ...
High Point: The Panthers have only one assistant coach, and alum Tubby Smith's Kentucky on the schedule. What's wrong with this picture? Where's the commitment to the program.

    Tournament tough ...
    NCAA: Winthrop.
