HOW THEY'LL STACK UP
RICHMOND: Playing for NIT bid; not a favorite of conference ADs.
GEORGE MASON: George Evans goes out on NCAA tourney stage.
UNC WILMINGTON: Blizzard might be best CAA has to offer -- ever.
JAMES MADISON: Filling 3 holes in lineup has left bench a little thin.
OLD DOMINION: Capel's security, McCullum make Monarchs better.
VA. COMMONWEALTH: Taylor, Jones and Lilly ... then what?
AMERICAN: Could overachive just to show why they're leaving.
EAST CAROLINA: No NCAA carrot makes motivating Pirates tough.
WILLIAM & MARY: Hey, everyone makes the CAA tourney this season.

Tuesday, Nov. 7
The CAA is heading toward a critical juncture next season with the loss of American, East Carolina and Richmond. But its last season as a full nine-member conference could be one of its best.

The problem is all nine teams won't be invited to the conference tournament. They have virtually handed the automatic berth to George Mason. The Patriots are the best of the remaining teams and would have had a fight with Richmond. But the Spiders' departure for the Atlantic 10 next season will keep them out of the tournament.

George Evans isn't just the oldest Division I player, he might be one of the best-kept secrets.

ESPN.com All-Colonial
  • Guard: Bo Jones
    Senior, 5-11, Va. Commonwealth
  • Guard: Brett Blizzard
    Sophomore, 6-3, UNC Wilmington
  • Forward: Patrick Doctor
    Junior, 6-9, American
  • Forward: Greg Stevenson
    Senior, 6-6, Richmond
  • Forward: George Evans
    Senior, 6-7, George Mason

    Player of Year ...
    George Evans, F, George Mason
The Patriots might only have 10 players on the roster, but one of them is the "Shaq" of the CAA. Evans, a 29-year-old Army veteran, has been the CAA Player of the Year two years running and shouldn't be challenged for the honor this season. The 6-7 senior's numbers a year ago when he once again dominated down in the paint: 18.1 ppg., 8.5 rpg, 58 percent FGs. Oh, and he also shoots free throws like the big fella: 53 percent.

    Introducing ...
    Donstantin Nesterov, F, Va Commonwealth
At 6-8, this Russian who played for the Baltic Star Club last season arrives with a European style and the outside touch that will be the envy of the CAA. Nesterov shot 42.5 percent from behind the arc in averaging 19.7 points and 7.8 rebounds. Another Ram to watch is Johnnie Story, who hails from a little closer to campus -- Hampton (Va.) High. Story put up 19.5 points, grabbed 12.5 rebounds and blocked three shots a game last season.

    Best backcourt ...
UNC Wilmington: Brett Blizzard, Barron Thelmon. Blizzard earned All-CAA honors as a freshman, a first for the CAA, and could wind up being one of the conference's all-time great scorers by the time he leaves Wilmington. The 6-3, 195-pound Blizzard averaged 15.6 points, shot 46.8 percent from behind the 3-point arc, while also handing out 2.4 assists a night. But the ball-handling duties fall on Thelmon, a senior who can also score (9.1 ppg.). Depth will be provided by 6-4 senior Dominick Scott.

    Best frontcourt ...
American: Patrick Doctor, Keith Gray and Saliouu-Binet Telly. The Eagles are flying off to the Patriot League after this season, but this group gets another go-around of dominating down low. Doctor, a 6-9 junior center, made All-CAA with a 15.4 average and seven rebounds a contest, while the 6-8 Gray and Telly complement their big man. Gray notched double-doubles in the final nine games last season.

    Team on way up ...
Richmond: The marquee team in the CAA is on its way to the Atlantic 10 next season. The Spiders aren't leaving alone, however. Both East Carolina (Conference USA) and American (Patriot League) are exiting, as well, at the end of the season and won't be eligible for CAA Tournament play.

    Team on way down ...
East Carolina: The Pirates have a nice football team, thus the move to C-USA. But this program better improve, and quick, or the winters will be awfully long in Greenville.

    Tournament tough ...
    NCAA: George Mason.
    NIT: Richmond.
