HOW THEY'LL STACK UP
ARIZONA: Hey, they're our preseason No. 1 team.
STANFORD: Second-best in the West ain't all that bad.
USC: Be sure to catch Jeff Trepagnier in action this season.
UCLA: Bruins once again teasing fans with talent.
CALIFORNIA: Sean Lampley will put Bears on his back.
OREGON STATE: Everything gets pushed back a year with Ricci injury.
ARIZONA ST.: Odd stat: Even without House, 71 percent of offense returns.
OREGON: Heck, the Ducks could finish third for all we know.
WASHINGTON ST.: Over-under is 10 wins: We'll be nice and take the over.
WASHINGTON: Can Marques play hoops? Didn't think so.

Tuesday, Nov. 7
Arizona is clearly the class of the league, if not the country. Stanford can give the Wildcats a run for the title. But the best race will likely be for third between USC and UCLA, and then for the final postseason berths -- likely the NIT -- among Cal, Arizona State, Oregon State and Oregon.

USC has the better starting five as a unit, but the Bruins have more potential NBA players. The two games between USC and UCLA will bring back one of the best rivalries in the nation.

The Beavers took a hit when they lost Phillip Ricci for the year. Losing him will put more pressure on Jason Heide and Brian Jackson inside. The sleeper team could be Cal, if the Bears get decent play at the point.

But the hardest team to figure is Oregon, which could surprise and finish in the top five or be a bottom-dweller.

ESPN.com All Pac-10
  • Guard: Jason Gardner
    Sophomore, 5-10, Arizona
  • Guard: Casey Jacobsen
    Sophomore, 6-6, Stanford
  • Forward: Jason Kapono
    Sophomore, 6-7, UCLA
  • Forward: Richard Jefferson
    Junior, 6-7, Arizona
  • Center: Loren Woods
    Senior, 7-1, Arizona

    Player of Year ...
    Richard Jefferson, F, Arizona:
We had to pick one of the Fab Five, so we went with Jefferson only because he should be fully healthy and ready to take charge in the Wildcats' offense. Then again, we could say that about Woods, Arenas, Gardner or Wright. Says something about Arizona, doesn't it?

    Introducing ...
    T.J. Cummings, F, UCLA:
He didn't go to dad's school or even stay in state. No, the 6-9 freshman came out West to make a name for himself and he should do so immediately. His scrimmages have been impressive to watch. Can't wait to see him under fire on Thursday night against Kansas.

    Best backcourt ...
Arizona: Jason Gardner and Gilbert Arenas. Gardner already is being projected as a first-round NBA pick whenever he leaves, drawing comparisons to Michael Bibby from his head coach after averaging 12.6 points and 4.8 assists as a freshman. His running mate, Arenas, worked out over the summer to add strength to his 6-3, 191-pound frame. Like he was soft last year?

    Best frontcourt ...
Stanford: Jarron Collins, Jason Collins and Ryan Mendez. Even with the loss of Mark Madsen, the Cardinal won't be pushed around down in the paint. Not as long as they have the Collins twins, who combined to average just under 20 points between them and grab 12.6 rebounds a game. Add swingmen Mendez and Casey Jacobsen, who averaged 14.5 points a contest, and even Arizona can't complain too much about being slighted. OK, so Woods, Jefferson and Wright are just as good. Hey, we tried.

    Team on way up ...
Oregon State: It would have been interesting to see what the Beavers could have done this season with a healthy Philip Ricci, who will now redshirt with an injury. But NIT is still an option for a team that won just 13 games overall and five in-conference a season ago.

    Team on way down ...
Washington: The Huskies just don't have any experience or legitimate options on offense with Michael Johnson (9.9 ppg.) as their perceived go-to player.

    Tournament tough ...
    NCAA: Arizona, Stanford, USC, UCLA.
NIT: California, Oregon State, Arizona State, Oregon.
