Sun Belt Breakdown

 ESPN.com

HOW THEY'LL STACK UP
EAST DIVISION
LOUISIANA TECH: Top player and freshman in Sun Belt return.
MIDDLE TENN. ST.: Not a bad time to join the Sun Belt.
W. KENTUCKY: Returns 78 percent of scoring, led by 7-1 Chris Marcus.
ARKANSAS STATE: Offense will revolve around Mr. Jennings in middle.
FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL: Carlos Arroyo provides a ray of hope.
ARKANSAS-LITTLE ROCK: Three coaches in three years is not good.
WEST DIVISION
LOUISIANA: This year's Cinderella? The shoe fits so far.
S. ALABAMA: Nine players return for last year's co-champs.
NEW MEXICO ST.: Sun Belt will be tougher (this year) then Big West.
NEW ORLEANS: Averaged a school-record low 59.9 ppg. last season.
NORTH TEXAS: Another Big West transplant.
DENVER: Simply overmatch every time it steps on the court.

Tuesday, Nov. 7
Louisiana wants to drop the Lafayette reference in its name and be simply referred to as Louisiana. Maybe that will get the Ragin' Cajuns noticed.

Jessie Evans has one of the top sleepers at any level with five returning starters. The Tennessee coaches said they were more scared about facing Louisiana in the first round than almost any other opponent. Louisiana had a chance to beat the Volunteers in the NCAA first round last year.

The Cajuns could pull off a first-round upset and end up being one of the sleepers to reach the Sweet 16. Louisiana could be a potential top 25 team if it wins two or three of its marquee non-conference games at Auburn, at Fresno State, and in the Fiesta Bowl Classic, which includes Mississippi State and host Arizona.

    Player of Year ...
    Gerrod Henderson, G, Louisiana Tech
There wasn't much Henderson didn't do a year ago and no reason to think he'll stop doing it all this season. Henderson, a 6-4 shooting guard, averaged 18.4 points and shot 39 percent from behind the arc. Add in 4.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.6 steals per night and you see why he's the class of the Sun Belt.

    Introducing ...
    Jason Jennings, C, Arkansas State
He's no stranger to Arkansas fans, just to Sun Belt foes. Jennings, a 7-foot center, sat out last season after transferring in from Arkansas. Jennings didn't fit the Hogs' fast-paced offense, but should fit in just fine with the Indians the next two seasons.

    Best backcourt ...
Louisiana: Blane Harmon and Orlando Butler. A pair of seniors in the backcourt who do just about anything asked of them, Harmon (12.5 ppg. 3.5 apg.) can shoot or distribute the ball, while Butler was a sixth-man specialist last season who scored 13.1 points off the bench. Harmon also made 36 percent of his 3-pointers (85 of 239).

    Best frontcourt ...
Louisiana Tech: Antonio Meeking, Zach Johnson and Jon Fowler. Johnson and Fowler are both 6-10, while Meeking was the Sun Belt's Freshman of the Year last season after averaging 11.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.

    Team on way up ...
Louisiana: Not just in this conference, but nationally, the Ragin' Cajuns are ready to break into the spotlight with a senior-dominated team that could find itself in the top 25 much of the season an in the Sweet 16 if things go their way in March.

    Team on way down ...
New Mexico State: It's not going to be an easy debut for the Aggies, who arrive off a second-place finish in the Big West and a 22-win season.

    Tournament tough ...
    NCAA: Louisiana.
    NIT: Louisiana Tech.
