BOX SCORE
MAUI, Hawaii (Ticker) -- Massachusetts tailback Marcell Shipp ran for one touchdown and caught a pass for another in a dominant second half as the North rallied for a 31-23 victory over the South in the annual Hula Bowl. Just three plays after Air Force linebacker Corey Nelson returned an interception 46 yards, Shipp scored on a 1-yard run to get the North within 23-14 early in the third quarter. On the South's next play from scrimmage, Toledo defensive end Rollins recovered a fumbled snap at the 39-yard line. Five plays later, Houston's Jason McKinley avoided a sack and threw a 12-yard TD toss to Shipp to trim the deficit to 23-21. The North grabbed the lead early in the fourth quarter on a 32-yard field goal by Ohio State's Dan Stultz. Hampton tailback Montrell Coley capped the scoring with a 1-yard run with 6:11 left. "I like a team that comes back and shows emotion," said Virginia Tech's Frank Beamer, who coached the North. "It is always important to win. We got a couple of breaks in the second half." McKinley completed 11-of-14 passes for 152 yards while Heisman Trophy finalist Drew Brees of Purdue was 10-of-20 for 125 yards and a touchdown. Kansas State's Jonathan Beasley passed for 125 yards and two touchdowns for the South, which used a 20-point second quarter to grab a 23-7 halftime lead. "It was one of the more exciting All-Star games," said South coach Bobby Bowden of Florida State. "We couldn't get any momentum in the second half. Neither team really deserved to lose. We couldn't make any plays in the second half and we probably only needed to make one or two plays to win the game." Ohio State's Reggie Germany was named offensive most valuable player after catching nine passes for 108 yards. The crowd of 23,719 was the fourth sellout in as many years at War Memorial Stadium.
