Top 5 ACC teams of BCS era
2013 Florida State Seminoles lead list of ACC's best teams since 1998
Plenty of realignment has occurred since 1998, so I decided to count seasons played by the current members of each league. In other words, Miami's BCS title seasons will be represented in the ACC rankings, rather than be relegated to the now-defunct Big East.
(Note: Due to the lack of available play-by-play and drive data, FEI ratings have only been calculated since 2003. For the 1998-2002 seasons, I produced an alternate set of ratings based on opponent-adjusted final scores. The alternate ratings have a 0.95 correlation with FEI).
Here are the five best ACC teams from the BCS era:
1. 2013 Florida State Seminoles (Record: 14-0)
Led by Heisman trophy winner Jameis Winston, the Seminoles capped off an undefeated season in 2013 with a victory over Auburn in the BCS Championship, the last of the BCS era. FSU scored to take the lead for good with only 13 seconds left against the Tigers, the only opponent all year that pushed the Seminoles to the final whistle. Florida State's average margin of victory for the season was 39.5 points per game, and the Seminoles posted a scoring margin of at least 50 points in five games.
