Oregon built to win BCS title
USC looms, but an elite-level defense could push Ducks to title game
ESPN Insider's "20 teams that can win it all" series is previewing each of the top 20 teams in Brian Fremeau's five-year program metric, with the help of ESPN's Stats & Information group (for a full explanation and links to all of the previews as they are published, click here). This is the entry for Oregon.
As I wrote last month, the Oregon Ducks have a legitimate chance to make it back to the BCS title game in 2012. Standing in their way are the USC Trojans -- another team I'm high on for this season that features a Heisman favorite (Matt Barkley), dynamic skill-position players (Curtis McNeill, Robert Woods and Marqise Lee) and an improving defense -- and emerging as the Pac-12 champion will be no easy task for the Ducks.
But the potential for Oregon to finish as the best team in the country by season's end is certainly there.
Here is a look at the reasons why the Ducks will -- or won't -- win the BCS national championship in 2012.
