TCU's edge over Michigan State
Frogs, Spartans should have defensive battle in Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl
The BCS National Championship Game between the Alabama Crimson Tide and Notre Dame Fighting Irish is notable for many reasons, but one of the elements that makes it stand out is that both teams have defenses that are capable of truly shutting an opponent down. That type of matchup occurs only a few times during the regular season and is even rarer in the bowl postseason.
It is that uncommon level of occurrence that makes the matchup between the TCU Horned Frogs and Michigan State Spartans in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl quite compelling. Both of these clubs have reputations for fielding strong defenses, but a closer look at the game tape and metrics indicates this game could feature some of the best play on that side of the ball the college football world will see during this postseason.
At first glance, it might not seem as though TCU's defense is performing at quite that level. After all, the Horned Frogs currently rank 29th in the FBS in passer rating allowed and have given up 21 touchdown passes this year.
