Hope springs eternal in every college football offseason, and in the case of the backers of the Virginia Tech Hokies, the hope is that the 2013 campaign will see a return to normalcy.

Prior to last year, the Hokies were riding a 19-season bowl appearance streak and were the only FBS school with 10 or more wins in each of the previous eight seasons.

That changed in 2012, as the possibility for a double-digit victory total was gone by the end of October, and if not for a second-half comeback win at the end of the regular season against a Virginia Cavaliers team that finished with a 4-8 record, the Hokies would also have seen an end to their consecutive bowl appearance run.

So was that downward slide a one-year anomaly? Or will Virginia Tech continue to see struggles this year that match those that plagued last year's club?

To find out, let's examine a number of factors on each side of that question, starting with the most important one, quarterback Logan Thomas.
