Safety Courtney Avery to miss opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Courtney Avery, Michigan's projected starter at free safety, will be out for about two weeks after undergoing minor arthroscopic knee surgery, coach Brady Hoke said Monday.

The senior captain, who has never missed a game in his career, won't play in the No. 17 Wolverines' opener against Central Michigan after having the procedure to remove damaged cartilage in his right knee.

Avery is questionable for Michigan's next game, against No. 14 Notre Dame.
