Ware perfected the run 'n' shoot offense when he was at Houston, winning the Heisman in 1989.

Ware became the first black quarterback to win the award. That season, Ware threw for 4,699 yards and 44 touchdowns, and set 26 NCAA records and 15 Southwest Conference records. Ware still ranks No. 4 in FBS history in average yards per game with 423.7, also set in 1989.

After that season, Ware left school early for the NFL draft. Detroit chose him in the first round, and he spent four seasons there, completing 83 of 161 passes for 1,112 yards, five touchdowns and eight interceptions.
