Upstart Notre Dame led defending No. 1 Miami, 31-24, with 7:04 remaining. The Canes had a fourth-and-7 at the Irish 11. Fullback Cleveland Gary caught Steve Walsh's pass near the first-down marker and stretched for the goal. What came first -- Gary's knee on the ground or Irish safety George Streeter knocking the ball loose for linebacker Mike Stonebreaker to recover? The officials chose the latter. Notre Dame hung on, 31-30, and finished No. 1.
