Holt to be named Vandals head coach

LOS ANGELES -- USC linebackers coach Nick Holt will be named head coach at Idaho, perhaps as early as Monday, Trojans head coach Pete Carroll said after USC's 52-28 defeat of Oregon State on Saturday.

Holt will replace coach Tom Cable, who was fired on Nov. 22 after going 3-9 this season.

Holt, 41, coached at Idaho for eight seasons, the last four as defensive coordinator. He left the Vandals in 1997, along with head coach John L. Smith, for Louisville.

Holt then left Smith's staff in 2000 to join USC.

"He's deserving of it," Carroll said. "We'll help him in any way. He's earned the right to move on. We're losing a great football coach. When you get strong, you can endure the hits."

Carroll said that he and his staff have discussed how to compensate for Holt's departure, but Carroll didn't elaborate.
