Smith breaks leg, return unknown

LOS ANGELES -- Southern California receiver Steve Smith
broke his left leg in the Trojans' 23-17 victory over California on

Smith, the team's leading receiver, left the game for good after
a 31-yard over-the-shoulder catch in the third quarter that led to
the Trojans' second touchdown.

Smith came into the game with 25 catches for 338 yards, both
team highs.

Trojans coach Pete Carroll said Smith fractured his fibula and
would probably be out for a while, though he did not get specific.

Smith, a sophomore, had two catches for 76 yards against Cal.
