Mattison will be co-defensive coordinator

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame defensive line coach Greg
Mattison said Friday he has accepted a job at Florida as
co-defensive coordinator, while Irish defensive coordinator Kent
Baer took his name out of the running at Utah State.

Mattison, who was defensive coordinator for the Irish for five
seasons until Bob Davie was fired as head coach, will rejoin new
coach Urban Meyer, who served on Davie's staff with Mattison.

Mattison said he will share the coordinator's job with Charlie
Strong, who he also worked with at Notre Dame for two season.

"I'm excited about it," Mattison said. "I think the world of
him (Meyer), I think the world of the job and I'm excited about
being with them."

Mattison plans to stay with Notre Dame through the bowl game.

Baer flew to Arizona on Wednesday to meet with Utah State's
president and athletic director to interview for the head coaching
job. He said his emotional heart was interested in the job, since
he grew up there and still has family there, but his "professional
heart" told him it wasn't the right job.

"I don't want to be a head coach just to be a head coach," he
said. "It was just a gut feeling."

Baer said he told the Utah State officials he would not accept
the job if it were offered.

Arizona State assistant coach Brent Guy was hired for the job on
Friday.
