SAN DIEGO -- Former Brigham Young center Bart Oates, who
later played for the Super Bowl-champion New York Giants, was one
of three people inducted into the Holiday Bowl Hall of Fame on
The others were former Kansas State quarterback Brian Kavanagh
and broadcaster Tony Roberts.
Oates started for BYU in the bowl game from 1980-82 and provided
protection for two Holiday Bowl Hall of Fame quarterbacks, Jim
McMahon and Steve Young. Oates was with the Giants when they won
the Super Bowl following the 1986 and 1990 seasons.
Kavanagh replaced injured Kansas State starter Matt Miller early
in the second quarter of the 1995 game and led the Wildcats to a
54-21 win over Colorado State, completing 18 of 24 passes for 242
yards and four touchdowns.
Roberts has broadcast the Holiday Bowl on national radio for 26
years, missing only the inaugural game in 1978. Roberts has also
been the voice of Notre Dame football for 25 years.
