Portland State adds California to fall schedule

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland State football team has added
California to its 2006 schedule, giving the Vikings two Division
I-A opponents next season.

The Division I-AA Vikings will travel to Berkeley, Calif., for
the Sept. 16 game against the Golden Bears. It is the first meeting
between the teams.

To make room for Cal, Portland State dropped McNeese State from
its schedule.

Portland State will also play at New Mexico in its season opener
on Sept. 2.

"We are always fighting the battle of who we are and what we
are at PSU. I think this says we are a good Division I football
program. This game would not have happened when we were playing at
Division II," Vikings coach Tim Walsh said.

The Vikings were 6-5 last year, 6-3 against 1-AA opponents. Cal
was 8-4 overall and 4-4 in the Pac-10, and beat Brigham Young in
the Las Vegas Bowl.

In 11 seasons as a member of Div. I-AA and the Big Sky
Conference, the Vikings are 1-10 against Div. I-A opponents,
including nine opponents from the Western Athletic Conference and
two from the Pac-10.

Last season Portland State lost 41-14 to Oregon State and 21-14
to Boise State. PSU's one win against a 1-A school was a 45-20
victory at Hawaii in 2000.
