Spillman was released from the Louisville jail Friday morning after being held on a $5,000 full-cash bond.
The arrest came a month after Spillman pleaded guilty to a marijuana possession charge stemming from his arrest on Jan. 31, 2007.
Spillman, a junior, was stopped at 12:08 a.m. Thursday, because of an unilluminated license plate, police said. Louisville Metro Police spokesman Phil Russell said Spillman did not pull over right away, and the 21-year-old smelled of marijuana and failed a field sobriety test, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.
Russell added that police found a marijuana cigarette and a .25-caliber pistol with one round in the chamber in his car, according to the Courier-Journal.
Spillman was charged with driving under the influence, possession of marijuana, carrying a concealed weapon and having no insurance, according to court records.
Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe is in Mexico on a family vacation.
"We are aware of JaJuan's situation," school spokesman Rocco Gasparro said, according to the Courier-Journal. "JaJuan's situation will be addressed when coach Kragthorpe returns later in the week."
In the January 2007 incident, police arrested and charged Spillman after a car accident occurred near Louisville's campus. Spillman and another person in the car admitted they had been smoking marijuana, and more than 9 grams of the drug were found in the car, according to police.
Spillman was charged with DUI and possession of marijuana, but the DUI charge was dropped last month because police were unable to prove he had been smoking marijuana immediately before the accident.
Spillman did plead guilty to the possession charge, and was fined $100 and ordered to attend drug counseling.
According to Louisville officials at the time of the first arrest, Spillman had been disciplined internally.
Spillman was suspended for most of the 2007 season, though school officials never revealed the reason for that punishment. Spillman had been seen arguing with coaches on the sideline during the Louisville-North Carolina State game in late September, however, and he did not play the rest of the season.
