Lee-Mail: Simms, Spartans, Brooks and Beano

By Lee Corso
Special to ESPN.com

Lee, why the heck has Texas quarterback Chris Simms gotten so much hype in the preseason, considering he has such limited experience? Should he be starting instead of Major Applewhite?
Rob, Burlington, Va.

I have no idea why he's gotten such hype. I think it's grossly unfair that so many people consider him a favorite for the Heisman when he's only had seven or eight starts, and has been just okay. He hasn't been great, in fact, the bowl game I saw him play against Oregon, he didn't throw one TD pass and had four interceptions. Those aren't Heisman numbers. The hype probably comes from his last name. He certainly has a lot of ability, but it is not fair to call him a Heisman front-runner. And no, I don't think he should start over Applewhite. I saw Applewhite beat Nebraska two out of three times -- YO! Nobody does that. If I were in charge, I'd start Applewhite -- he's the best quarterback in America sitting on the bench.

Editor's Note
Lee Corso and the rest of the Gameday crew can't get to every campus this season, so ESPN.com has given fans another option: It's called "Lee-Mail." Lee has an opinion on just about anything related to college football. So, go ahead and send him a question. He'll answer each Wednesday during the season in "Lee-Mail."

Why hasn't Nebraska been able to land a big name tailback recruit, like Virginia Tech's Kevin Jones, since Ahman Green left? You would think the best tailbacks would be lining up to go to NU.
Tim, Beresford, S.D.

Nebraska has recruited two or three very talented high school tailbacks that scared everybody away. There is only one tailback position. If a good, but not great, kid sees the best players in the country going to NU to play their position, they figure they aren't going to play much. No one wants to sit on the bench.

If either Ryan Van Dyke or Jeff Smoker steps up and has a good year for Michigan State, do you think they could challenge for a Big Ten title?
Wick, Marshall, Mich.

I don't think they'll challenge for a Big Ten title, but I do think they'll be a highly improved football team. They have a lot of players coming back, and some good talent -- like Charles Rogers -- coming in. Michigan State is my surprise team in the Big Ten, and I think they're going to the Alamo Bowl.

Is the Pac-10 going to have to start from scratch all over again proving that it's one of the top two conferences in the country?
Matt Ferguson, Hartsdale, N.Y.

Washington's win in the Rose Bowl was very important, and Oregon State's blasting of Notre Dame was impressive. They continue to improve, getting better athletes and better coaches. Things like that solidified that they are the third best conference in the country, behind the SEC and the Big 12.

Do you think the Gators can go all the way this year?
Josh Lynn, High Springs, Fla.

It will be tough. Everybody is out to beat the Gators, and they will probably lose at least one game, and maybe two.

Are you related to Mel Brooks? And could you take Beano in a back-alley brawl?
Cyle, Harrisburg, Pa.

I've heard that before, that I remind people of Brooks. I'm not related to him, but I sure wish I had his money. As for Beano and I, it'd probably be a tie because we'd both be running in the opposite direction. Actually, I take that back -- I bet I could out-run Beano these days; he's not as quick as he used to be!

Lee, I can't wait for you guys to hurry up and get going! With Purdue losing Brees, no one seems to give the D enough credit to carry them to a repeat title. What do you think Purdue will do this year?
PurduePhan, Carmel, Ind.

I think they will be good, but their success will come from running the football and their defense. Their D is one of the best coming back in the Big Ten. No one is going to replace Brees, but I like the Boilermaker's chances -- Joe Tiller is an excellent coach.

Who wins the SEC? What your favorite SEC game when you look at this seasons schedule?
Joel, Knoxville, Tenn.

Florida will be the SEC winner, and the game I wouldn't miss on the SEC schedule this year is Tennessee at Florida.

Lee, Much like FSU did with Peter Warrick in their plans, do you see Florida getting Lito Sheppard a couple touches a game on offense? He is an incredibly talented open field runner, with amazingly quick feet.
Dan, Feasterville, Pa.

I'd make sure to give him a couple of touches. I'd throw the quick screen out to him, I'd give him those short passes and let him run, throw some reverses. He's a tremendous defensive back, and a great punt returner. You bet I'd throw him a few balls.

Do sportscasters know something about John Navarre at Michigan that we don't? Michigan is ranked as high as ten with Navarre at the helm -- the same Navarre who crumbled at UCLA and Illinois last year. Does he really have what it takes to lead Michigan?
Todd Pinsky, Atlanta, Ga.

Navarre is a much better quarterback than people give him credit for. He hit over 50 percent of his passes last year, with eight touchdowns and only one interception in the four games he started. Navarre isn't Michigan's concern. If they are an improved club this year, it will be because their defense is much improved. Chris Perry could be a superstar.

Will Paterno open up his offense more this year after finally implementing the shot-gun formation last year against Purdue?
Mark, Pittsburgh, Pa.

I think Joe will open up a little bit, but he doesn't really have the athletes to open it up. Paterno is hurting on offense; their defense will be their saving grace.

Mr. Corso, most intelligent people here in Huntington know that Marshall isn't going to beat Florida on September 1st. But do you think Marshall will be another Florida blowout, like most of the Gators' first games, or will the Thundering Herd actually play close with them through four quarters.
Michael Adams, Huntington, W.Va.

At halftime, it will probably be a pretty good ballgame, because Marshall is a better team than people expect -- especially on defense. But they are playing at The Swamp, which is no picnic. The Herd should be able to keep it tight through the first half, but then the Gators will probably blow them out, simply because of depth.
