IOWA ST 17, NORTHERN IOWA 10

AMES, Iowa (Ticker) -- The days of Seneca Wallace seem like a
distant memory for Iowa State.

Austin Flynn's three-yard TD run snapped a tie in the third
quarter as Iowa State held on for a 17-10 victory over Northern
Iowa.

Iowa State played its first game since the graduation of
Wallace, the school's all-time single-season leader in passing
yards. Wallace helped lead the Cyclones to three straight bowl
games, although they stumbled down the stretch a year ago and
finished 7-7.

Flynn, Wallace's successor, had an up-and-down day as he threw
for 158 yards and completed half of his 18 pass attempts. Flynn
and Michael Wagner led a strong ground attack for Iowa State,
combining for 154 yards.

Flynn guided the Cyclones to an eight-play, 81-yard drive that
he capped with his short scoring run for a 17-10 advantage with
2:22 left in the third quarter. Flynn also threw a 13-yard
touchdown pass to Jack Whitver in the second quarter.

The Cyclones, who never trailed, stifled the Panthers in the
final quarter on four drives. Northern Iowa advanced into Iowa
State territory only once and quarterback Tom Petries'
fourth-down pass with 68 seconds left fell incomplete.

The teams were meeting for the first time since Wallace scored
on a pair of long runs in a 45-0 victory in his debut two years
ago.
