But given the rare chance to win a game with his arm, Henderson
threw a 12-yard TD pass to Marcus Battle with 1:16 left in a 28-24
victory over San Jose State on Saturday.
"We don't pass a lot, but our running game allows us to be
effective when we do," said Henderson, who ran for 111 yards and a
touchdown and was 10-of-13 passing for 110 yards.
"Their safety played it pretty good. I had to jump pretty high,
but Greg put it in a perfect spot," Battle said.
Rice (1-4, 1-1 Western Athletic) drove 78 yards in 12 plays to
take its first lead of the game on Battle's touchdown. The drive
included key completions of 20 and 16 yards to John Brock.
"There were no bigger plays in the game than John Brock's two
clutch fourth quarter catches," Rice coach Ken Hatfield said.
San Jose State (1-4, 1-1) led 17-14 after the third quarter
behind the passing of Scott Rislov, who went 26-of-33 for 261 yards
and a touchdown.
His touchdown pass came on fourth down with 10:22 left, a 5-yard
pass to Courtney Anderson to put the Spartans up 24-14.
Rice cut the deficit to 24-21 on Robbie Beck's 2-yard touchdown

"We ran the ball well early. The running game starts with the
offensive line and they were still coming off the ball hard in the
fourth quarter," Hatfield added.
The Owls pulled within 17-14 at halftime on touchdown runs of 12
yards by Henderson and 1 yard by Beck. Beck's run capped an
80-yard, 14-play drive late in the half.
"Early I thought we executed our offense the way we are capable
of. Then they started to blitz and it affected us, "San Jose State
coach Fitz Hill said. "We played hard and we had chances to make
plays to win the game but we didn't make them. You can't let them
convert on third down and long like we let them."
