FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) -- Arkansas quarterback Matt Jones ran for 132 yards and had three third-quarter touchdowns to turn a close game against New Mexico State into a 48-20 victory Saturday.
Marvin Jackson added a 73-yard punt return for a touchdown during a 28-point quarter that Arkansas (7-3) needed to win its third straight game.
Even All-America offensive tackle Shawn Andrews got in the scoring, rushing for a 1-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
New Mexico State (3-8) made things interesting, trailing 14-10 at the half and 21-17 midway through third quarter thanks to a pair of touchdown passes by Buck Pierce, who completed 12 in a row at one point. For the game, he was 19-of-26 for 214 yards.
However, two plays after Pierce hit Ronshay Jenkins on an 18-yard touchdown, Jones put Arkansas back in control at 28-17 with a 62-yard touchdown run.
Cornerback Spencer Moore fell for a fake pitch on the option and no one touched Jones, who broke Arkansas' career record for rushing yards by a quarterback on the play. Jones, a junior, has 1,783 rushing yards, surpassing Quinn Grovey's total of 1,746 from 1987-90.
Jones also was 8-of-10 for 139 yards and a touchdown. In the past three games, he's 35-for-49 for 547 yards and seven touchdowns.
New Mexico State had no answer for Jones' touchdown, and Jackson gave Arkansas a 35-17 lead with 5:09 left in the third quarter.
Reserve tailback Kyle Dickerson added a 5-yard touchdown run in the final minute after Arkansas ran 7:43 off the clock with its reserves.
Arkansas had four plays of 10 yards or more in the first quarter, but a fumble by Cedric Cobbs killed its best drive at the New Mexico State 22. Cobbs, the Razorbacks' leading rusher with 860 yards, had just one carry the rest of the game.
New Mexico State took a 3-0 lead on a field goal by Dario Aguiniga early in the second quarter.
The pair hooked up for a 25-yard pass on the first play of a six-play drive that ended with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Smith to give Arkansas a 7-3 lead. In between those passes, fullback Mark Pierce added a 33-yard run on the 90-yard drive.
After stopping New Mexico State on three plays, Jones got things started with a 32-yard pass to George Wilson. The seven-play drive ended with Andrews carrying for a 1-yard touchdown, giving Arkansas a 14-3 lead with 4:50 left in the first half.
New Mexico State pulled within 14-10 at the half after a 14-play, 82-yard drive that ended with Pierce throwing a 12-yard pass to Chris Duncan with 21 seconds left in the quarter.
