WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) -- Facing a 17-point deficit and mired in a
two-game losing streak, TCU turned to banged up quarterback Brandon
Hassell responded by leading the Horned Frogs to a last minute
score for a 21-17 victory over Army on Saturday.
"I started persuading him and finally told him that he could
get hurt for the rest of the season, but this game might be for the
season," TCU coach Gary Patterson said. "So I told him, 'It's now
or never. We've got to make some plays."
Lonta Hobbs scored on a 2-yard run, his second touchdown, with
41 seconds left to seal the victory and extend Army's losing streak
to 19 games, the longest in the nation.
Hassell, who replaced an ineffective Kyle Kummer, completed 14
of 23 passes for 158 yards and one touchdown for the Horned Frogs
TCU scored 21 straight points to beat an Army team that has not
won at home since beating Tulane 42-37 on Oct. 27, 2001.
Hobbs, who finished with 106 yards despite being limited to just
11 yards in the first half, capped an 11-play, 62-yard game-winning
"It wasn't pretty for us, but you have to give Army a lot of
credit," Patterson said. "They haven't won many football games,
but they played hard and gave it everything they had and they just
about got us."
Carlton Jones ran for 108 yards and a touchdown for Army (0-4,
0-2). Zac Dahman, starting his first game for the Black Knights
this season, was 12 of 26 for 214 yards.
"It was a game of almost two halves," said first-year Army
coach Bobby Ross, coaxed out of retirement to try to rebuild the
struggling program. "We won the first one and they won the second
one. Unfortunately, they came out on top.
"I feel like now I know where we can go to. We've got seven
football games left. There's a lot of season left."
TCU's offense, which entered the game ranked 26th in the nation,
struggled in the first half, slowed by 11 penalties for 89 yards.
Dahman threw a 54-yard pass to Jacob Murphy on the second play
of Army's first possession, and Tielor Robinson scored on a 3-yard
run three plays later, giving the Black Knights their first lead of
the season at 7-0.
On Army's next possession, Dahman hit Walter Hill with a 35-yard
pass to move to the TCU 10. That set up Carlton Jones' 10-yard TD
run, extending the Black Knights' lead to 14 points. Austin Miller
later capped a 13-play drive with a 25-yard field goal, pushing
Army's lead to 17-0 with 2:28 left in the first quarter.
But TCU wasn't done.
An 11-yard touchdown run by Hobbs capped an 75-yard drive and
gave TCU its first score with 5:58 left in the third quarter. On
its next possession, TCU mounted an 89-yard drive capped by
Hassell's 29-yard TD pass to Cody McCarty.
