Rice 44, SMU 10

HOUSTON (AP) -- Ed Bailey ran for 158 of Rice's 496 rushing yards and scored four touchdowns as the Owls beat Southern Methodist 44-10 Saturday.

Bailey had touchdown runs of 1, 9, 5 and 1 yards as Rice (3-2, 2-1 WAC) bounced back after losing the highest-scoring regulation Division I-A game last week. The Owls lost 70-63 at San Jose State.

Quarterback Joel Armstrong, replacing the injured Greg Henderson, ran for 138 yards on 14 carries. The Owls only passed for 5 yards and they held the ball most of the second half.

SMU (1-5, 1-2) ran just eight plays in the third quarter and didn't get in the end zone until Jerad Romo hit Chris Foster for a 38-yard touchdown late in the game.

Tony Eckert completed 14 of 22 passes for 138 yards for SMU, and Bobby Chase caught five passes for 91 yards.

Rice led 28-3 at halftime on a 9-yard TD run by Quinton Smith and three Bailey touchdown runs.
