HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) -- Damion Carter threw for two touchdowns
and ran for another and Southern Mississippi held East Carolina to
minus three yards rushing in a 51-10 win Saturday night.
Carter threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Antwon Courington and a
23-yard scoring toss to Tavarres Williams to give Southern Miss
(5-1, 4-0 Conference USA) a 49-3 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Six different players scored for Southern Mississippi, including
Anthony Harris, who scored on runs of two and 13 yards.
Southern Miss led 35-0 at the half.
East Carolina (1-5, 1-3) had trouble running the ball and
protecting quarterback James Pinkney. Pinkney, who threw for 181
yards and one touchdown, was sacked seven times.
Southern Mississippi had 13 tackles for losses.
The Golden Eagles took their opening possession 80 yards on
eight plays with Wayne Hardy capping it off with a 4-yard touchdown
Southern Miss took at 14-0 lead when Antoine Cash picked up
fumble on a sack and ran it 62 yards to East Carolina's 2-yard
line. Harris scored on the next play, a 2-yard TD run with 1:13
remaining in first quarter.
A fake punt by East Carolina deep in its own territory gave
Southern Miss its next score. The Golden Eagles had a short field
after the botched attempt, getting the ball at East Carolina's
18-yard line. Three plays later, Carter scored on a 1-yard run to
extend the lead to 21-0.
Sherron Moore added an 8-yard touchdown run with 1:23 left in
the first half to provide halftime margin.
Pickey found Chris Johnson in the middle of the end zone with a
3-yard pass to cap 20-play, 84-yard drive with 11:24 remaining to
give East Carolina its only touchdown.
Southern Miss has won 13 straight conference games, dating back
to last season.
