WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) -- Reggie Lindsey turned the game UAB's way late in the first half, and Army could never get it back.
Lindsey's 63-yard kickoff set up Darrell Hackney's go-ahead scoring pass and spurred the Blazers to a 20-14 win over the Black Knights on Saturday.
"I knew that whichever team took the lead was going to be in the driver's seat today," UAB coach Watson Brown said. "That return may have been the biggest play of the game."
Playing in a cold, steady rain, Hackney completed 20 of 32 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns to lead UAB (7-3, 5-2 Conference USA) to its fifth straight win over Army (2-8, 2-6).
Dan Burks ran for 110 yards and Roddy White, the nation's leading receiver, had five catches for 62 yards and a touchdown for UAB.
Tielor Robinson had 65 yards rushing and 50 yards receiving for Army in its last game as part of Conference USA. Aaron Alexander added seven catches for 111 yards and one TD.
The win gave UAB a boost as it seeks its first bowl game since moving to Division I-A in 1996.
"I'm sure this solidifies," a bowl game, Brown said. "We've got a chance to finish second in this league all by ourselves and if we win our last game, then that's what happens."
UAB got on the board first when Nick Hayes hit a 32-yard field goal to cap an 67-yard opening drive.
The Blazers were moving again on their next possession, but a fumble by Corey White was recovered by the Black Knights at the Army 18, ending the scoring threat. After that, both teams struggled offensively for most of the half, hampered by the wet conditions.
UAB fumbled the ball four times in the first half, losing it twice while Army gave up one fumble.
"It was the kind of day where you need to take care of the ball, get points when you can, play good defense and be solid in the kicking game and I think that's what we did," Brown said.
With just under three minutes left in the second quarter, Army got the ball on its own 39 after the Blazers botched a field goal attempt.
On the next play, running back Carlton Jones passed to a wide open Jeremy Trimble for a 55-yard gain. Jones punched it in from 3 yards out to give Army a 7-3 lead with 1:45 remaining in the half.
The lead didn't last long.
Lindsey's kickoff return set up Hackney's 9-yard TD strike to Bradly Chavez that put the Blazers up 10-7 at halftime.
"Lindsey's a great return guy and he can do a lot of things, but we've got to do a better job covering in that situation," Army coach Bobby Ross said. "It was a huge play. It hurt us a lot."
UAB started the second half with an 80-yard drive that ended with a Hackney's 4-yard TD pass to White, his 12th touchdown this season.
The Blazers made it 20-7 with 1:25 left in the third quarter on Hayes' 29-yard field goal.
Jones, the nation's 10th leading rusher, was held to just 35 yards on 10 carries by the Blazers. He left the game in the second half after suffering a leg injury.
"That hurt us some obviously because Carlton has been our workhorse," Ross said. "There's no question that we missed Carlton a little bit."
Aaron Alexander caught a 2-yard TD with 3 seconds left for Army.
Army quarterback Zac Dahman went 25-of-43 for 264 yards, setting a career pass completion record for the Black Knights with 444.
