PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Bruce Gradkowski threw four touchdown passes and ran for another score, and Toledo became the latest team to rout Temple, 42-17 on Saturday.
Michael Billops scored on a 78-yard run, one of the few bright spots for Temple. The Owls (0-3) have been outscored 170-33 in losses to Arizona State, Wisconsin and Toledo.
A week after racking up 612 yards in a 56-23 victory over Western Michigan, Toledo (3-0) outclassed Temple. The Rockets jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, and cruised the rest of the way.
Gradkowski, who became the first I-A quarterback to complete at least 70 percent of his passes in two consecutive seasons last year, threw TD passes of 13 yards to Trinity Dawson and 22 yards to Chris Hopkins in the first eight minutes.
He tossed a 16-yard TD pass to Jon Allen in the second quarter, sat out the first two series of the third quarter after being shaken up late in the first half and returned to lead Toledo to two more touchdowns.
Gradkowski broke two school records in the first half, becoming the career leader in yards passing (7,410) and completions (613). He finished 20 of 29 for 182 yards.
Toledo's Keon Jackson intercepted a pass that bounced off the hands of wideout Bruce Gordon and ran it back 66 yards for a TD to give the Rockets a 21-0 lead.
After Gradkowski connected with Allen for a score, Billops put Temple in the end zone for the third time this season. He broke several tackles then ran untouched the final 65 yards.
The Owls drove to Toledo's 12 in the third quarter, but settled for a 29-yard field goal by Ryan Lux that cut it to 28-10.
Gradkowski came back in after Clint Cochran failed to move the offense and led Toledo 73 yards, finishing the drive with a 1-yard TD run that made it 35-10. His TD pass to Nick Moore gave the Rockets a 41-10 lead in the fourth.
Colin Clancy tossed a 20-yard scoring pass to Brian Allbrooks to make it 42-17 and Temple recovered the ensuing onside kick. But the Owls couldn't score again.
Temple had a chance to take a lead, driving to Toledo's 22 after the opening kickoff, before quarterback Mike McGann fumbled.
A sparse crowd turned out at Lincoln Financial Field -- home of the NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles -- to watch Temple play its first game against a Mid-American Conference opponent since joining the league for the 2007 season.
Temple, which went to the MAC after being kicked out of the Big East, has one of the toughest schedules in the nation. The Owls' 11 opponents finished a combined 83-48 (.634) last year and eight teams played in bowl games.
It won't get any easier for Temple, which has three games remaining against teams ranked in The Associated Press Top 25. But the Owls have their best chance of winning next week when they host Western Michigan.
